Different Types of Leadership:

In any working environment, there exists a  form of management. When we talk about styles of management or leadership we generally categorize them it to groups of similar managers/leaders. there are numerous forms of management, but for this exercise we will look at three they are Autocratic, Democratic and Laissez-Faire.

Autocratic:

This Leadership Style “allows managers to make decisions alone without the input of others” R. Johnson (2015). In this form of leadership the management possesses their authority on their employees. Generally Autocratic Leaders adopt a McGregor Theory X approach to team management. Organisations with these leaders, all decision making authority comes from the top and employees have no input and are unwilling to challenge the decisions of the leader.

The best examples of this form of leadership are government dictatorship, such as North Korea and Cuba. Leaders which followed this form of management would include Adolf Hitler, leader of Germany from 1932-1945.

Democratic:

The word Democratic comes from the Greek words Demos meaning People and kratos meaning rule.Democratic leadership also known as Participative leadership values the input of the team much more than autocratic. This form of leadership boosted morale for employees as it gives them a sense of self belonging as their view is, This leadership style hinders the production of employees needing supervision. Important. This can be due to their involvement in the overall decision process of the company. This approach to leadership makes it easier for managers to institute change in the workplace, as the employees are involved in the decisions that are needed during the change. This form of leadership is used by most nations around the world, prime examples of such countries include the USA and the UK where the leadership is elected by the people. Leaders which follow this form of leadership include Barack Obama.

Laissez-Faire:

Laissez-Faire leadership, this is where the leader/manager sets out a task for the employees/team but provides no direct supervision of employees and fails to provide regular feedback to those under their supervision, This leadership style may hinder the production of employees which needing supervision. This style of leadership can lead to poor production, lack of control and increasing costs. This is due to the lack of leadership from management, and supervision, which could have prevented any costly delays.
